Did you know the original Jack-O’-Lanterns weren’t even pumpkins? The custom of carving Jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween began in Ireland during the 19th century.

Originally, turnips were used. So, see, it’s not uncommon to carve other fruits and veggies for Halloween!

In our latest Facebook Live event, we showcased off a few of our favorite Halloween fruits and vegetables carvings, including a pineapple, cantaloupe, bell peppers, onions and more! Here’s how to carve fruits and veggies for Halloween:

How to Carve a Pineapple for Halloween

Grab tips to pick the best pineapple here.

Step 1: Cut off the top of the pineapple.

Step 2: Use a pineapple corer (like this one!) to easily remove the fruit from the inside of the pineapple, keeping the outside intact. Chop fruit and store for snacking later on!

Step 3: Use a sharp paring knife to cut out desired shapes or face from the pineapple exterior.

Step 4: Place candle inside, if desired, and add the top of the pineapple.

How to Carve a Cantaloupe for Halloween

Step 1: Cut off ½-inch from the bottom of cantaloupe.

Step 2: Use a melon baller to remove seeds from the center of cantaloupe and discard. Then use the melon baller to remove fruit from inside the cantaloupe, keep outside intact. Store fruit in a container in the fridge for snacking.

Step 3: Use a sharp paring knife to cut out desired shapes or face from the cantaloupe exterior.

Step 4: Place candle inside, if desired.

How to Carve a Bell Pepper for Halloween

Step 1: Use a sharp paring knife to cut around the stem. Remove stem and seeds from inside.

Step 2: Use knife to cut out desired shapes or face from the front of the bell pepper.

Step 3: Stuff with your favorite stuffed bell pepper filling and bake for a delicious dinner!

Carving an onion for Halloween

How to Carve an Onion for Halloween

Grab tips to pick the best onions here.

Step 1: Cut off ¼-inch from the bottom and top of onion. Discard bottom, but keep the top for later.

Step 2: Use a melon baller to remove the inner layers of the onion, keep the outermost 2 layers intact. Save the inner layers you scoop out to chop and add to another dish!

Step 3: Use a sharp paring knife to cut out desired shapes or face from the onion exterior.

Step 4: Top with onion top.
